Six Doors of the Invisible was written in the summer of 2022. In a sense it is a deconstruction or reconstruction of the drum kit in simplified form: a cymbal, a floor tom and a snare. It is also, however, an exploration of different kinds of silence: suspenseful silence, formal silence, silence to be decorated, silence to decorate, and so on.
Original programme note:
Six doors of the invisible; or a series of ritual episodes attempting to make manifest a door-like threshold through which to peer at the stranger within, and reach out to touch; still our hands and let loose our lungs. To do this, we cannot take the risk that we might be misunderstood. We should try instead to guarantee it. Or to render ourselves inscrutable and unknowable. There are at least two different kinds of silence in this piece, and it will probably be between six and eight minutes long.
