Πολυτροπος (2016) for Bass Clarinet

Πολυτροπος [Polytropos] was written for and is dedicated with gratitude to James Wood, without whom it would not have been possible.

Πολυτροπος is an epithet for the Ancient Greek god, Hermes, who has many faces; he is the conduit between worlds, the one who stands at thresholds, transitions and boundaries. Πολυτροπος is based on musical tendencies and energies extracted from an improvisation between myself and James Wood. Rather than merely transcribed ‘results,’ the materials from the recording of the improvisation were turned into behavioural algorithms which interact with each other and their environments as though creatures in a biosphere. This carried through into the notation, where materials are treated as ‘thickets’ to be hacked through or meticulously cultivated.

See the performance notes for more information.

Detail on the construction of the piece is contained in Chapter 3 of my master’s thesis.
